Criminal law is a broad area of law that covers issues arising from police arrest and investigation, based on the suspicion of criminal activity. Criminal law addresses indictments, accusations, and criminal pleas as well as trials. Additionally, criminal law addresses problems associated with probation or parole, as well as requests for expunging or sealing criminal records. A criminal case is a lawsuit brought by the state against a person who has broken a criminal law. Not only do the women suffer violence from the husband but also from the family members of the husband specially when the issue is of dowry whether lack of it or an unsatisfactory amount.

A person is entitled to basic amenities like food, clothing, shelter and other necessary requirements to live a dignified life. Under the principles of social justice, it is the natural duty of a man to provide these amenities to his wife, parents and children in the form of maintenance. The maintenance law in India lays down the duty of a man to provide maintenance to his parents, wife, and children when they are unable to maintain themselves. Maintenance in law is defined as the amount which is paid to the dependent wife, child, or parents to maintain themselves. The amount can be paid either by doing one lump sum payment or by way of monthly instalments.
